Volunteers from the People for the Parks clean up MLK Equality trail

JACKSON, MI -- Jackson’s main pedestrian trail now has two new trash cans due to a donation from People for the Parks and Trails.

The nonprofit organization used a $2,000 Communities in Action Grant from the Jackson Community Foundation to make the donations to the city of Jackson for the MLK Equality Trail.

“The trash cans are already helping to reduce litter and pet waste along Jackson’s main pedestrian trail, a community fixture that is vital to resident health and non-motorized transportation,” President Aaron Dimick said. “We thank the Jackson Community Foundation for this grant, which is essential for new organizations like PPT to start their work of impacting the community.”

The first trash can was installed earlier this summer on the MLK Equality Trail off S. Martin Luther King Jr, Drive, which is a known trouble spot for litter. The second trash can was put in place in September on the trail near S. West Avenue, a section of the trail with heavy pedestrian and pet traffic.

The parks non-profit originally proposed to use part of the grant on bike rack installations but had to change gears due to costs that exceeded the grant amount, Dimick said.

“We’re dedicated to providing bike racks for Ella Sharp Park and hope to facilitate those installations over the next year,” he said.

People for the Parks and Trails is dedicated to improving city of Jackson parks and trails through volunteer projects, fundraising and advocacy. Since the resident-based group started in 2021, volunteers have completed 16 improvement projects in local parks, Dimick said.

PPT works directly with the Parks and Recreation Department to do tasks city staff may not have time for, like picking up trash, sprucing up landscaping, removing graffiti and painting pavilions.

More information about the group and volunteer opportunities are posted on PPT’s website and Facebook page.
